Record $3.13 Million Purse Up for Grabs at 25th MidAtlantic Tournament!
Monday, August 22, 2016

The sweltering heat and oppressive humidity which had covered the mid-Atlantic region for well over a week finally broke when cool temperatures followed a line of thunderstorms late last night bringing welcome relief. With the cooler temperature came a modest northwest breeze and this change in weather kept all but seven boats, including two from Cape May and five from Ocean City, tied to the docks on Day One of the 25th MidAtlantic. Those that did fish on Day One reported sea conditions to be a bit sporty by fishing terms. With weather improving by the end of the day today it’s expected a majority of the fleet will head offshore tomorrow.

The tournament staff was busy late into the night tallying all the entries after the event’s Captain’s Meetings were held on Sunday in Cape May and Ocean City. When all entries were totaled up the tournament fleet stood at 157 participants and the total cash purse was set at a record $3.13-plus million!

The evening’s weigh-in session on Day One saw Larry Hesse’s Goin’ in Deep based out of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with Captain Walter Harmstead at the wheel take the lead in the tuna category after weighing a 67-pound yellowfin in Ocean City. Also in Ocean City, Ed Bondarchuk of Lighthouse Point, Florida aboard his Moore Bills weighed a wahoo of 75 pounds to take the lead in the category and Gary Damore’s Triple By-Pass hailing from Berlin, Maryland leads the dolphin category after weighing an 11-pounder.

Of the seven boats that gave it a go Day One, Robert Manetta’s Tra-Sea-Ann from Brick, New Jersey with Captain Jeff Thiel on the bridge found a nice pocket of water and released a blue marlin and a white marlin. No other billfish releases were reported.

Please note The MidAtlantic is a private event and not open to the general public. All tournament venues require credentials for entry.
